Project Tshav Ntuj
Project Tshav Ntuj: A Grassroots Mental Health Initiative Founded in July 2019, Project Tshav Ntuj emerged as a response to the tragic suicide of a Hmong high school student. The student's teacher, Ms. Pang Yang, music instructor, Mr. Keng Yang, and family members were catalysts in forming this initiative to address suicide among Hmong youth. That summer, 18 Hmong educators, clinicians, artists, and community members united to tackle the pressing mental health needs and rising suicide rates in their community. As more young lives were lost, the group's sense of urgency intensified. They formally adopted the name "Project Tshav Ntuj" and began planning an event focused on mental health through artistic expression, investing significant time in organizing and building community partnerships. In November 2019, Project Tshav Ntuj held its inaugural event, "Because Tomorrow Matters," at Washington Technology Magnet School. The response was overwhelming, with over 700 attendees. The event successfully initiated crucial conversations about mental health and suicide, garnering media attention including coverage by Minnesota Public Radio. This exposure has established Project Tshav Ntuj as a sought-after mental health resource both locally and nationally. The community's enthusiastic response underscored the critical importance of mental health awareness and the need for continued efforts. In January 2020, Project Tshav Ntuj members reconvened to plan future goals, objectives, and projects, reaffirming their mission "to prevent suicide and promote mental health in the Hmong community." Project Tshav Ntuj expresses deep gratitude to the numerous artists, professionals, and community members who have provided unwavering support. The organization looks forward to continuing this vital work alongside current and future partners.
