Kao Kalia Yang
Kao Kalia Yang is a Hmong American educator, speaker, and writer whose diverse body of work transcends various audiences and genres. She has earned accolades as the accomplished author of award-winning memoirs, including "The Latehomecomer," "The Song Poet," "Somewhere in the Unknown World," and "Where Rivers Part." Additionally, Yang played a pivotal role as the co-editor of the groundbreaking book "What God is Honored Here?: Writings on Miscarriage and Infant Loss By and For Native Women and Women of Color." Notably, she contributed as a librettist for "The Song Poet Opera," commissioned by the MN Opera. Yang's literary contributions extend to children's books, such as "A Map Into the World," "The Most Beautiful Thing," "The Shared Room," "Yang Warriors," "From the Tops of the Trees," and "The Rock in My Throat," all of which revolve around the experiences of Hmong children navigating the challenges and joys of the world. Her work has received widespread recognition, earning her accolades from prestigious institutions and awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Chautauqua Prize, PEN USA literary awards, the Dayton's Literary Peace Prize, and distinctions as Notable Books by the American Library Association. Her books have also been listed among Kirkus Best Books of the Year and received the Heartland Bookseller's Award. Yang has been honored with four Minnesota Book Awards. Furthermore, she holds fellowships from McKnight, Soros, and Guggenheim.
